Mozzhukhin (2008) is a performance installation by cowboy bij nacht, inspired by a classic cinematic experiment by Lev Kuleshov, known today as the “Kuleshov effect”.
Around 1918, Lev Kuleshov edited a short film in which shots of actor Ivan Mozzhukhin, looking into the camera, were intercutted with fragments of various objects. The audience praised the acting skills of Mozzhukhin; first an object made him hungry, then sad, etc… In reality the audience always saw the same shot of the actor, in which he actually looks quite expressionless.
Cowboy Bij Nacht is curious about the theatrical implications of this experiment, and invites the audience to act as a test person.
Ruis ik slecht verstaan and Bomans hoort u mij are two new theatre shows from Cowboy Bij Nacht and het NUT, a theatrical remake of the 1971 dutch radioshow ‘Alleen op een Eiland’. For both performances (playing simultaneously, and connected through a live radio connection) i composed music and took care of the design of the soundsystem.
My short film 24H Panorama will be screened at the International Environmental Short Film Festival, taking place from june 5-10 2008 in Istanbul (Turkey). My film is scheduled on the 8th of june at 20.30 hrs. Other selected dutch films (from Peter Delpeut, Erik Urlings, Frank van den Engel and Froda Kuipers) will be screened as well on this festival.
From may 25 - 28, Cowboy bij Nacht will present their latest performance Muisman Opnemen at Festival a/d Werf 2008 in Utrecht. Daily at 21.15 hrs, Wednesday May 28th also at 17.00 hrs.
This week I am attending the fourth and last week of the Cimatics Masterclass Live A/V 2007/2008 in Brussels. Cimatics is a Brussels based international platform for Live A/V. This Masterclass consists of a series of 4 workshops with lectures from different internationally renowned media artists / theorists (amongst others Marc Amerika, Lab[au], Yves de Mey, Jerry Galle, Brendan Byrne & Ana Carvalho, Boris Debackere). The practical part is all about collaboration: 10 selected artists, working in different fields of media-art (and with backgrounds ranging from choreography to architecture) form groups and collaborate with each other, with the aim of creating an audiovisual performance project.
Muisman Opnemen is the newest performance of theatre group cowboy bij nacht, for which I again composed the soundtrack. Muisman Opnemen is based on the novel ‘The Overcoat’ by Nikolaj Gogol (1809 - 1852) and is about Muisman, a civil servant with a futile function. He nevertheless loves his job and everyday, he arrives happy at the office. One day, he meets the impulsive ‘girl upstairs’. She pursues him to buy a new overcoat. This overcoat will forever change his life.
From february 15th - february 19th 2008, i will present a new video from my ‘Time Sketch’ series at exhibition Narratives in Space // Spatial Narrations in Ghent (BE). This installation exhibition is organised by Ghent based foundation Existentie, a platform that brings together artists, arts critics and curators.
Time Sketch #2 (1.20 min. loop / SD Video / No Sound) is a short experimental video work, based on the same ideas and techniques i used in 24H Panorama and Scenes From My Backyard. Here, i experimented with the idea of showing simultaneously four different ‘tempi’ of one take of footage. Time appears in a stretched or compressed manner, creating a sort of ‘temporal disorientation’.
